主持人：您如何看待香港最近的動盪？

Grenville Cross：我們最初看到的是針對引渡建議的和平抗議。但是和平的抗議運動已被狂熱分子劫持。這些人意在使用暴力來表達自己的觀點，並且實現自己的目標。這些人不尊重他人的權利。基本上，他們是在向整個社會宣戰。

主持人：您是否認為警察在處理情況時使用了過度的武力？

Grenville Cross：警察在行動中採取了很大的克制。當他們實際上遭到攻擊並且要求抗議者退後的要求被忽略時，他們才採取行動來規範局勢。試想一下，如果英國議會或美國國會也遭到暴徒的入侵，外國警察會對參與其中的任何人進行極其嚴厲的打擊。他們（香港警察）按照警察的最高傳統行事，我為他們感到驕傲。

主持人：外來勢力將香港目前的動盪歸咎於北京。您對此有何看法？

Grenville Cross：這些當然是非常不合理的評論。香港享有高度自治權。北京一直在嚴格維護香港的法律制度、生活方式和資本主義制度。我們確實很幸運，它能夠以這種方式繼續下去。因此，對於國務卿蓬佩奧先生來說，這純粹是反華言論，實際上沒有任何根據。

Host: What do you think of the recent unrest in Hong Kong?

Grenville Cross：We saw a peaceful protests initially against the extradition proposals. But the peaceful protest movement was hijacked by fanatics. And these are people who have paired to use violence in order to make their points， and as they see it， achieve their aims. These are people who have no regard for the rights of others. And basically they're declaring war on society.

Host: Do you think the police used excessive force when handling the situation?

Grenville Cross：The police have exercised massive restraint. They've only moved to regularize the situations when they've actually been attacked and when all demands for the protesters to back off have been ignored. Just imagine if the United Kingdom Parliament had been invaded by a mob as well or the United States Congress， the police would have struck very hard indeed on anyone who'd been involved. They've(HK Police) acted in the highest traditions of the police force and I'm very proud of them.

Host: External forces attribute Hong Kong’s current unrest to Beijing. What’s your take on it？

Grenville Cross：These of course are highly irrational comments to make. Hong Kong enjoys a high degree of autonomy. Beijing has been scrupulous in maintaining the Hong Kong legal system and its way of life and its capitalist system. We are very fortunate indeed that it has been able to continue in that way. So for the Secretary of State Mr. Pompeo to say that， it is purely anti-china rhetoric which actually has no basis in reality.
